What Naora Is Really About. Written Before Anyone Had Heard of It

We are writing this in March 2024. The website does not exist yet. The boat has not been ordered. Nobody outside the four of us and a handful of people we have described the concept to has heard of Naora. We are writing it because the thing we are building deserves to be described honestly before the building process shapes the description around the audience and the market and the specific things that a programme in the process of launching needs its description to do. This is the version before the strategy. This is what Naora is really about.

Naora is about the offshore sailing life in the specific form that the five-year circumnavigation of the planet’s four oceans produces and that no shorter or shallower version of the offshore experience replicates. The Atlantic crossing that takes three weeks. The Pacific that takes twenty-two days and produces the first landfall at the Marquesas in the form that only the passage makes possible.

The Red Sea sailed in the direction of the prevailing wind. At the end of the journey.

The Coral Triangle with the diving programme that has been building. The community that assembles itself around the boat and the shared experience and that persists between legs in the Circle and that reconvenes at the boarding with the specific quality of the people who have been through the offshore experience together and who know what they share without it needing to be described.

The Promise We Made to Ourselves

The promise we made to ourselves in March 2024 — the four of us, before the first member had booked a leg or the first article had been published or the website had gone live — was the promise that the programme would be built to deliver what the offshore sailing life actually gives people rather than what the marketing description of the offshore sailing life promises.

These are different things. The marketing description promises the beautiful destination and the luxury experience and the exclusive community. The offshore sailing life gives the person the evidence of who they are when the professional identity is not structuring the experience — the capacity and the composure and the presence that the offshore passage reveals and that the marketing description cannot describe because it is not a destination or an experience or a community. It is the person themselves, seen in the conditions that make the seeing possible.

This is what we are building Naora for. Not for the Marquesas, though the Marquesas are extraordinary. Not for the community, though the community is the unexpected dimension that most members describe as the thing they would not now give up.

For the specific thing that the offshore sailing life gives the person who engages with it honestly: the offshore reference that changes the quality of every subsequent decision about how they use their time and their attention, because the person who has the reference has the evidence of what they are capable of when the structure that was preventing the capability is removed.

The Eighty2 departs Bodrum in May 2027. The legs are filling. The programme is being built to the standard of the promise we made in March 2024. The person who reads this in 2026 or 2027 and finds themselves in the description is the person we were writing for when we wrote it, before anyone had heard of Naora, in the specific clarity of the early period before the building process shapes the description around what the audience needs to hear rather than what the programme is actually for.
