I called Antony because I knew he would tell me the truth. Not the diplomatic truth of the person who is protecting the relationship from the discomfort of the honest assessment, the actual truth, delivered in the specific way that Antony delivers it, which is directly and with the genuine interest of the person who wants to understand rather than the person who wants to judge. I had known him long enough to know the difference between these two kinds of honest and to know which kind Antony practices.
I told him what I had been thinking about. The route, the boat, the membership structure, the community, the specific combination that I thought could make the offshore sailing circumnavigation accessible to the people who needed it most and who the existing market was not serving in the right form. I talked for probably twenty minutes. Antony was quiet for most of it, which is what Antony does when he is thinking rather than when he is not interested, the silence is different and I know the difference.
When I finished, he asked one question. Not: is this financially viable. Not: what is the market size. He asked: who is this for, specifically, and why can they not get this somewhere else? It was the right question. It was the question that everything else depended on and that I had been circling without landing on in the twenty minutes of the explanation. I answered it. The answer was good. Antony was quiet again for a few seconds and then he said: I think you need to build this. And then he said: I think I need to help you.
What the Conversation Produced
What the conversation produced was not a plan. The plan came later. What it produced was the specific shift in the weight of the idea: the idea that had been entirely inside my head for the months of the accumulation became, in that conversation, the idea that was also in Antony’s head.
The sharing of it changed its character. The idea that one person carries is the idea that might not happen. The idea that two people are carrying is the idea that has begun to become the thing it is describing.
We talked for another hour. By the end of that hour, Antony had already started thinking about the community architecture in the way that Antony thinks about community architecture, with the specific attention to the human dynamics that the offshore sailing life produces and that the membership programme needs to honour rather than manage. He was not yet a co-founder.
He was the person who had just heard the idea and who was already thinking inside it. That was enough for the first call. The next steps would follow from it.
