I Came for the Ocean. I Stayed for the People. I Came Back for Both.

The person who books their first Naora leg books it for the offshore experience. The route, the ocean, the diving, the passage. The specific quality of the places the circumnavigation reaches and the specific quality of the sailing life that reaches them. These are the right reasons and they are sufficient reasons for the booking. The person who comes aboard for these reasons gets these things.

What they do not anticipate is the people. Not because the Naora community is not described. It is, in detail, on every page of the website. But because the description of a community is always the description of an abstraction, and the abstraction does not produce in the reading the specific feeling that the reality produces in the living.

The twelve people on the first leg are described in advance as interesting, curious, accomplished, the kind of people who make the offshore experience more than the sum of its physical parts. This is accurate. It is also impossible to fully believe until you are at anchor in the bay on day four and the conversation around you has become the specific conversation that twelve people who have been through four days of the offshore passage together produce, and you understand from the inside rather than the description what the community aspect of the Naora voyage actually is.

The Return Leg

The members who come back for a second leg come back for both. The ocean is not diminished by familiarity, the Pacific crossing is not less extraordinary the second time than the first, and the diving in the Coral Triangle is not less extraordinary the second time than the first. But the community layer has acquired the depth that the first leg introduced and that the Circle app and the onshore events and the digital sessions have been building between legs.

The second leg is the leg with the people from the first leg who also came back, and the new people who are having their first time, and the specific quality of the offshore reunion between people who shared the first experience and are now sharing a second one in a different ocean.

The reunion at the boarding of the second leg is one of the specific pleasures of the Naora membership that the first-time member cannot anticipate because they have not had it yet. The person you last saw at the end of the previous leg, disembarking in whatever harbour the route had reached, is suddenly on the same dock in a different ocean a year later.

The conversation picks up where it ended without the social preamble that the reconnection with acquaintances normally requires, because the offshore experience creates the specific kind of knowing that does not require reintroduction. You shared the night watch and the difficult sea and the first whale shark and the last evening that nobody left early. That does not require a preamble. It is already there.

Come for the ocean. Stay for the people. Come back for both.
