How to Know if Naora Is for You: Twelve Honest Questions

How to Know if Naora Is for You: Twelve Honest Questions

The Naora membership is not for everyone. I have described this in terms of the selection process that the programme applies, but the selection process is the final confirmation of the self-assessment that the person who is right for the programme has already made. The twelve questions below are the self-assessment. Answer them honestly. The honest answers will tell you whether the Calendly conversation is the conversation you should book or the conversation you should skip.

One. Can you be on a boat for one to four weeks without the option to leave when the experience becomes uncomfortable? The offshore sailing life produces discomfort — the seasick first days, the rough night, the social friction of twelve people in close proximity over an extended period. The person who needs the option to leave when it gets hard is not the person the offshore sailing life is designed for. The person who can stay is.

Two. Are you genuinely curious about the places the route visits, not as the Instagram backdrop but as the actual geography and culture and history that the circumnavigation passes through? The offshore sailing life rewards the curious. It does not reward the person who wants the beautiful setting without the specific engagement that the beautiful setting requires.

Three. Can you be a genuine participant in a group of twelve people you have not met before — contributing, not performing, showing up in the actual form rather than the professional version? The offshore context removes the professional identity more quickly than most people expect. The person who cannot function outside the professional identity is the person who finds this uncomfortable rather than liberating.

Four. Do you have the physical health to be safely active on an offshore sailing boat? Not the fitness of the athlete, the general health of the adult who can walk a mile, climb a companionway, swim in the ocean, and manage the physical demands of the offshore day without the medical complication that the offshore context cannot manage.

Five. Are you willing to not have the answer? The offshore context produces situations in which the expert knowledge of the professional life is irrelevant and the situation requires the beginner’s learning rather than the expert’s performance. The person who cannot be the beginner on the offshore boat misses the specific dimension of the offshore life that produces the most.

Six. Can you spend extended time without the professional inbox without the anxiety of the person who is managing the professional absence rather than experiencing the offshore presence? The offshore life requires the genuine decision to be offshore. Not the disciplined non-checking. The genuine release.

Seven. Is the budget the budget — meaning, are the membership fees the fees you can commit to without the financial pressure that converts the offshore experience from the investment in the offshore life into the source of the financial anxiety that the offshore context cannot resolve? The Naora membership is a significant commitment. The person who makes it under financial pressure is not the person who benefits from it most.

Eight. Do you have the support at home to be away for the duration of the leg — the partner, the family, the professional coverage — in the form that allows you to be on the boat rather than managing the home from the boat? The offshore life requires the genuine presence on the boat. The person who is managing the home from the satellite phone is not on the boat. They are at home on a boat.

Nine. Are you drawn to the offshore sailing life itself rather than the offshore sailing life as the status signal? The offshore sailing life is genuinely extraordinary. It is not the status signal of the luxury travel market that happens to be extraordinary. The person who joins for the status discovers that the offshore context dissolves status rather than conferring it. The person who joins for the life discovers that the life is what was described.

Ten. Can you eat whatever the galley produces without the dietary requirement that the offshore provisioning cannot consistently accommodate? The offshore galley is exceptional. It is not the dietary restriction specialist kitchen. The member with the severe allergy or the complex dietary protocol creates the specific operational challenge that the offshore galley manages imperfectly. The honest conversation about this happens before the booking.

Eleven. Are you the person who reads the pre-departure guidance and follows it — the recommended arrival timing, the luggage guidance, the boarding logistics — rather than the person who arrives on their own terms and expects the programme to accommodate the difference? The Naora programme is professionally managed. It requires the professional management to function. The member who follows the guidance is the member the programme was designed for.

Twelve. When you imagine the Long Table in the offshore anchorage on day five — twelve people who have been through the passage together, eating Richard’s dinner, with the offshore stars above and the anchorage around them — does the image produce in you the specific recognition of the thing you have been looking for, or the comfortable thought of the thing that sounds nice? The recognition is the answer. The comfortable thought is the person for whom the Calendly conversation is a conversation for later rather than now.
