I want to describe honestly what we had in March 2024, because the retrospective account of the origin story tends to make the early period look more organised and intentional than it was, and the honest account is more useful to anyone who is building something and who benefits from knowing that the things worth building typically start in the same condition: more conviction than infrastructure, more vision than execution, more belief than evidence.
What we had in March 2024: two founders who had agreed in principle to build the programme together. Sven, founder and captain, and Antony, co-founder. A domain that had been registered. A name that we were confident about. A route that Sven had been developing for twenty years and had laid out for Antony on a paper chart.
A boat that Sven had identified and that the two of us had agreed on.
A membership structure sketched on the back of something that was not a proper sheet of paper. A financial model in early draft that answered the question of sustainability rather than the question of profit. A vision for the website that we had described in words and not yet built. No website. No members. No boat. A plan.

Why This Was Enough
The plan was enough because the plan was the right kind of plan: built from the genuine conviction of Sven, who had been preparing for it for twenty years, supported by Antony’s commitment to building it alongside him, and grounded in the honest assessment of what it required rather than the optimistic projection of what it might become. Sven’s responsibility was clear then and remains so now: he plans every weather window and sails every leg himself.
We were not building Naora on the assumption that it would grow into something larger than itself. We were building it to be exactly what it was designed to be: the offshore sailing circumnavigation made accessible to the people who needed it and who could not get it in the form it needed to be in anywhere else.
The members would come. The website would be built. The boat would be ordered. All of these would happen in the order they needed to happen and at the pace the building required. In March 2024, the thing that needed to exist was the plan that the building could follow. The plan existed. That was the right place to be for March 2024. Everything since has been the building of what the plan described.
