We Registered Naora.world On A Tuesday Morning In February

It was a Tuesday morning in February 2024. Sven was on a call. I was at my desk with the domain registrar open and the search results showing that naora.world was available. The .world extension had been the obvious choice the moment we had the name: not .com, not .be, not the country code of the place where the company was being incorporated.

The world, because the circumnavigation goes around it and because the community we were building was not a Belgian sailing club or a European membership programme. It was the world. The extension said what the concept was.

I clicked register. The confirmation came back in the standard automated form that the domain registration industry produces: the invoice reference, the nameserver details, the renewal date in twelve months. Nothing in the confirmation email indicated that the domain being registered was for the five-year circumnavigation of the planet’s four oceans on a luxury catamaran with an invitation-only membership community. It looked, from the confirmation email, like every other domain registration. The significance was entirely in the head of the person reading it.

Why The Small Concrete Moment Matters

I forwarded the confirmation to Sven with no message. No comment, no exclamation mark, no announcement. The confirmation was the message. Sven replied with a single word that I will not reproduce here because it was the specific Belgian expression that Sven uses when something has moved from the category of the idea to the category of the real, and the translation does not carry the weight of the original.

The domain registration is not the interesting part of the Naora story. The boat and the crew and the route and the community and the members and the offshore experience itself are the interesting parts. But the domain registration was the moment that the interesting parts acquired the address where they could eventually be found by the people who needed to find them.

Every conversation we have had since that Tuesday morning in February leads back to naora.world. Every member who discovers the programme discovers it there. The confirmation email was the smallest possible concrete action that produces the largest possible downstream consequence. It was, in its quiet way, the beginning of the public version of the thing that had until that point been entirely private. I am glad I forwarded it without a comment. The domain said everything that needed to be said.
