Living Out of a Bag Is Not the Same as Living on a Boat

Living Out of a Bag Is Not the Same as Living on a Boat

The bag contains everything. You have learned to pack for any climate in less than twelve kilograms because the twenty-kilogram check-in bag was the weight of the person who had not yet understood that the life you are living works better the lighter you travel.

The laptop, the chargers, the three pairs of versatile trousers that can be dressed up or down, the running shoes that double as everything else. You are good at this. You have been doing it long enough that the packing is the twenty minutes before the taxi rather than the two days before the flight that it was at the beginning.

Living on a boat is the bag-based nomadic life with the specific things added that the bag cannot carry. The community that travels with the dwelling, not the co-working space community of the people who work in proximity, but the community of the twelve people who are on the same route through the same ocean making the same passage and sharing the same table at the end of the same day.

The route that has a meaning beyond the next booking, the circumnavigation of the planet that began in Bodrum in May 2027 and that ends in the Mediterranean in January 2032, the arc that gives each leg its place in something larger than the leg itself. The home that is also the vehicle in the specific sense that the vehicle is going somewhere real rather than between the airports.

What the Boat Has That the Bag Does Not

The bag produces the freedom of the person who is not tied to a place. The boat produces the freedom of the person who is not tied to a place and who is moving toward something with the people who are moving toward the same thing. These are related freedoms and they are not identical.

The bag-based nomad is free but typically solitary in the specific way that the freedom of the individual without the community of the shared destination produces: independent, mobile, and occasionally aware that the independence and the mobility are producing the life they optimised for without quite producing the life they were optimising toward.

The boat provides the community without requiring the fixed address that the community normally requires. The twelve people on the leg are the community for the duration — the people who are on the same route and who share the same home and whose day is organised by the same ocean. You can keep the bag. The boat adds the thing the bag has never been able to carry
