The World Cruise Brochure vs the World Cruise Bill: What MSC and the Major Lines Don’t Tell You Upfront

The world cruise is available. MSC, Cunard, Viking, Celebrity, Silversea, and the full range of the major lines offer the around-the-world itinerary in January of most years — the four-month voyage from the home port in Europe or North America that circles the globe through the Panama Canal or the Suez Canal and calls at the major ports on every continent.

The cabin rate for the world cruise starts at approximately €5,000 to €8,000 per person for the interior cabin on the mid-tier lines and reaches €40,000 to €80,000 per person for the suite on the luxury lines. The cabin rate is the number in the brochure. It is not the number on the final invoice.

The cruise line’s commercial model is built around the cabin rate as the entry cost and the onboard revenue as the profit centre. The passenger who boards the world cruise at the cabin rate and spends four months aboard spending money at the rate the ship is designed to produce generates a total spend that is significantly above the cabin rate.

The specific revenue centres that the cruise ship places between the passenger and the destination experience are the subject of this article, and they are worth understanding before the comparison with any alternative form of the world voyage is made.

The Gratuity — The Cost That Is Not Optional

The cruise ship gratuity — also called the service charge or the hotel service fee depending on the line — is typically charged at €15 to €25 per person per day on the mid-tier lines and €25 to €40 per person per day on the luxury lines. It is applied automatically to the passenger’s onboard account and is presented not as a choice but as the standard charge that the cabin rate does not include.

On a 120-day world cruise at €18 per person per day, the automatic gratuity is €2,160 per person. On the luxury line at €35 per person per day for four months, it reaches €4,200 per person. This is the cost that the brochure cabin rate does not contain and that every passenger on every world cruise pays without exception.

The gratuity funds the crew’s income in the specific model that the cruise industry has standardised: the base salary below the living wage of the passenger’s home country, supplemented by the gratuity pool that the automatic daily charge generates. The crew works hard for the gratuity. The passenger pays it regardless of whether the service was excellent or adequate. It is not a tip in the voluntary sense. It is a mandatory crew compensation supplement that the cruise line’s business model externalises to the passenger rather than incorporating into the cabin rate.

The Excursion Programme — The Shore Experience at Shore Prices

The world cruise calls at approximately 40 to 60 ports over the four months. At each port, the cruise line offers the excursion programme: the organised shore tours that take the passenger from the ship to the destination and back within the port window that the itinerary allows.

The excursion prices range from €50 for the basic bus tour to €300 to €500 for the premium small-group cultural experience. The world cruise passenger who does one excursion per port at an average of €150 per person spends €6,000 to €9,000 on excursions across the voyage.

The passenger who skips excursions entirely spends the port window on the quayside within walking distance of the ship, which, at most of the world cruise’s port calls, is the container port or the commercial harbour rather than the part of the destination the passenger came to see.

The world cruise itinerary is designed around the ports that the large cruise ship can physically enter and that the port authority has the infrastructure to handle. The large cruise ship cannot enter the outer Tuamotu lagoon. It cannot anchor in the Banda Sea seamount. It cannot visit the Brothers Islands in the Red Sea. The world cruise calls at Papeete and Bali and Colombo and Aqaba, the commercial ports that service the cruise industry and the excursion takes the passenger from the commercial port to the part of the destination worth seeing, at the excursion rate, in the window the itinerary provides.

The Drinks Package, the Speciality Restaurants, and Everything Else

The cruise ship cabin rate includes the main dining room at the scheduled meal times. It does not include the speciality restaurants, the steakhouse, the sushi bar, the chef’s table that the ship offers as the premium dining experience above the included buffet and main dining room. It does not include the drinks package: alcohol, premium coffees, bottled water, and sodas are charged to the onboard account at the bar rate unless the passenger has purchased the drinks package at €50 to €100 per person per day.

On a 120-day world cruise, the drinks package alone adds €6,000 to €12,000 per person above the cabin rate for the passenger who purchases it. The passenger who does not purchase the package pays the bar rate per drink across four months.

The spa. The casino. The onboard shopping. The Wi-Fi package — the world cruise ship charges separately for the internet access that the passenger on a four-month voyage requires: the packages range from €20 to €50 per day for unlimited access, adding €2,400 to €6,000 to the voyage cost for the passenger who needs to remain connected.

The photo package, the laundry service, the specialty fitness classes, the port charges and government taxes that some lines list separately from the cabin rate: each a modest daily amount that compounds across 120 days into a significant total.

The world cruise at the mid-tier line cabin rate of €15,000 per person produces a total spend of €25,000 to €35,000 per person across the four months when the gratuities, the excursions, the drinks, the Wi-Fi, the speciality dining, and the general onboard spending are added. The brochure rate and the voyage cost are not the same number.

The passenger who budgets the brochure rate and boards the ship discovers the difference progressively across the four months as the onboard account accumulates the charges that the brochure did not contain.
