Innovation at Sea: Partners Who Are Rebuilding Their Industry From the Inside

Innovation is one of the most overused words in business communication and one of the most underused practices in most businesses. The word appears in every brand deck, every investor presentation, every job description for roles that have nothing to do with creating anything genuinely new. In most of its appearances, it means incremental improvement to an existing product within an existing category using an existing production and distribution model.

This is not innovation. It is optimisation, and optimisation is legitimate and valuable and categorically different from the thing the word innovation is supposed to describe.

Genuine innovation, in the sense that is coherent with the Naora voyage, is the rebuilding of an industry’s foundations: the food producer who redesigned the supply chain from the soil rather than from the distributor, the technology company that redesigned the data architecture from privacy rather than from extraction, the materials company that redesigned the product lifecycle from the end rather than from the beginning.

These companies are not making existing products better. They are making different products that replace existing ones because the existing ones are built on assumptions that the genuinely innovative company has abandoned.

The Industries We Are Watching

The food industry is being rebuilt from the inside by the producers who understood before their competitors that the industrial food system’s assumptions, efficiency at the cost of nutrition, scale at the cost of locality, shelf life at the cost of freshness, were not load-bearing.

The most interesting food companies are the ones who replaced those assumptions with the ones that produce better food: the direct farm relationship, the seasonal menu, the supply chain short enough that the producer and the consumer are in the same conversation about what quality means.

The clothing industry is being rebuilt by the brands who understood that the fast-fashion model’s assumption, that the value of clothing is in its novelty and that novelty requires replacement, was both commercially and ecologically self-defeating.

The most interesting clothing companies are the ones who replaced novelty with durability: the single garment designed to last rather than the seasonal collection designed to be replaced, the repair service that extends the life of what was already made rather than the new collection that renders it obsolete.

The financial industry is being rebuilt by the institutions that understood that the complexity-for-fee model, in which value is obscured by the structure that prices it, was a relationship that the most sophisticated clients were increasingly unwilling to accept. The most interesting financial companies are the ones whose transparency is structural rather than regulatory: not the disclosure that the compliance department requires but the clarity that the client relationship demands.

Why the Voyage Is the Right Context

The Naora voyage is the right context for genuine innovation because the offshore sailing life is one of the most demanding use environments available for any product category: the food is provisioned from markets on five continents and must perform for people who are physically active in conditions ranging from the cold of the North Atlantic to the heat of the Coral Triangle.

The equipment is used continuously in saltwater environments by people who depend on it for safety and comfort over years rather than months. The technology must function from the outer Tuamotu atolls and the Red Sea offshore sites and everywhere between. The clothing must perform in four seasons across four oceans on people who are on deck in conditions that most users of outdoor clothing never encounter.

The innovator’s product that performs in these conditions has passed the test that the product brief cannot fully simulate. The people who used it there will know what it is and will say so to the people who ask, in the specific networks where the opinion of someone who sailed it across the Pacific matters considerably more than the rating of someone who used it in the car park of a sporting goods store.

The voyage is the most credible demonstration environment available for the companies who are rebuilding their industries from the inside and whose products deserve a context that reveals the difference between genuine innovation and incremental optimisation.
