Antony: Why I Left The World Of Startups And Concert To Help Build Naora

Before Naora I was in startups. The Belgian startup ecosystem, Concert, the world of enterprise connectivity. I understand the startup rhythm. I have been in rooms where the deck is being built for the investor meeting and in rooms where the product is being killed because the market did not confirm the hypothesis and in rooms where the thing that was supposed to fail did not fail and everyone in the room understood simultaneously that something real had been made. I know what building something feels like at the early stage when it is not yet certain that it should exist.

What I found in the Naora concept at the Chasse Royal dinner was the specific thing that the startup world occasionally produces and that the Concert world occasionally produces and that most professional projects never produce: the idea that was not an improvement on an existing thing but the first version of a genuinely new category.

The offshore sailing membership programme for the selected community of the global professional who wants the offshore sailing life integrated into the professional year is not the better charter week. It is not the more exclusive liveaboard. It is not the more sophisticated sailing school. It is the thing that none of those things were managing to be, assembled for the first time in the form that the combination of the offshore sailing life and the community architecture and the year-round Circle membership makes possible.

In the startup world, you look for the insight that the market has not yet reached. The insight that the Naora concept carried was the insight that the offshore sailing life, the thing that the sailing press had been describing for decades and that the charter industry had been approximating for decades and that the offshore racing world had been living for decades, had never been packaged in the form that the senior professional who needed it most could access and sustain.

The charter week is too short. The racing crew position requires the skills. The solo circumnavigation requires the full commitment. The Naora membership is the gap between all three.

What The Startup World Gave Me That Naora Needed

Startup experienceWhat it builtHow Naora uses it
Product-market fit assessmentThe discipline of testing the idea against the actual needThe selection process that confirms the member fit before the commitment
Community architectureThe understanding of what makes a community sustain rather than disperseThe Circle design: the year-round programme that keeps the offshore community alive between legs
Early-stage team buildingThe judgment of who to build with rather than who is availableThe Naora founding partnership: Sven and I, each bringing the specific capacities the programme required
Category creationThe patience for the product that needs the market to understand it before it can scaleNaora is a new category. The patience for the category creation is the startup patience applied to the offshore world.
Concert and events communityThe understanding of the live experience that the digital equivalent cannot replicateThe Long Table in the offshore anchorage: the experience that the Circle platform points toward and that the leg delivers

I left the startup and the Concert world to help build Naora because Naora was the new category that the offshore sailing life had been waiting for and that no one in the offshore sailing world was going to build because no one in the offshore sailing world had the community architecture background to see that the sailing was the context and the community was the product.

Sven had the sailing. As Naora’s founder and captain, he plans every weather window and sails every leg himself. I joined him as co-founder, bringing the community architecture. The dinner at Chasse Royal was the moment the two found each other. Our partnership was the result. The programme is what the two of us built.
