You Are Not Too Old for This. You Are Exactly the Right Age.

We have a conversation with the person who says: I would love to do this but I think I am probably too old for it. I understand where this comes from. The offshore sailing life is marketed, in most of the formats it appears in, as the adventure of the young, the gap year crew position, the sailing school in the Canaries, the round-the-world race that the documentary follows in the form of the young professional who gave everything up to do it.

The imagery is the imagery of the physically extreme experience designed for the body in its twenties. If this is the image, the person in their forties or fifties looks at it and concludes: not for me. This conclusion is wrong.

The Naora membership is not designed for the person in their twenties. It is designed for the person who has built something, the career, the judgment, the financial capacity, the specific life experience, and who is ready to use what they have built in the context that rewards it most fully.

The offshore sailing life does not reward youth. It rewards presence, composure, curiosity, and the willingness to engage honestly with the difficulty and the beauty that the passage produces simultaneously. These are not the qualities of the young. They are the qualities of the person who has been paying attention for long enough to have developed them.

The forty-five-year-old who has been paying attention has more of them than the twenty-five-year-old who has not yet needed to.

What the Offshore Life Actually Asks

The offshore sailing life asks the person to be present, to contribute to the group, to manage their own physical and emotional state in the conditions the passage produces, and to be genuinely curious about the offshore world that the circumnavigation reveals. It does not ask for the athletic performance of the racing sailor or the physical endurance of the offshore race crew.

The Eighty2 is the crewed offshore sailing boat, the crew sails the boat, the members participate in the sailing to the degree that their interest and their confidence allow, and the level of physical demand is the level that twelve adults in reasonable health manage comfortably. The member who is not a sailor arrives and learns. The member who is already a sailor contributes what they know. Both are correct. Neither requires youth.

The person who is exactly the right age for the Naora membership is the person who has the professional and personal experience to bring something real to the table in the anchorage, literally, the Long Table in the offshore bay — and who has the capacity to receive what the offshore experience offers without the filter of the person who has not yet learned to be still.

The forties and the fifties are the decades in which most people who will ever develop this capacity have developed it. The twenties are when it is being built. You are not too old for this. You are at the point where this produces what it is designed to produce. The question is not whether you are the right age. It is whether you are ready to use what you have.
