What You Cannot Learn About Yourself in the Office

What You Cannot Learn About Yourself in the Office

The professional context is optimised for the performance of the known self. The job description, the role, the established competencies that the career has confirmed and the organisation rewards: these are the parameters within which the professional operates and within which the professional identity is constructed and maintained.

The professional who has been excellent at their work for twenty years is excellent within the specific definition of excellence that the professional context has established. They know this. Their organisation knows this. Their clients know this. The specific question that the professional context does not answer and does not need to answer for the purposes of the professional relationship, is what they are like in the conditions that fall outside the definition.

The offshore sailing passage falls outside the definition. Not because it is dramatically different from the professional life in every respect, the offshore passage has its own version of the decision under uncertainty, the team management under pressure, the planning that the conditions subsequently revise.

But because the conditions that produce these familiar challenges produce them in the physical form that the office chair does not produce: the weather that the body receives as weather rather than as a forecasted risk to be managed, the night watch that the nervous system manages rather than the calendar, the rough sea that the composure manages rather than the risk assessment framework.

The offshore passage is the professional context’s challenges in the form that the professional context removed from them.

The Knowledge That Only the Difficult Situation Produces

I have watched professional people in the offshore context. What the offshore passage consistently produces in them that the professional context does not is the specific knowledge of who they are when the performance infrastructure is absent: when the job title is not relevant, when the established reputation does not apply, when the specific conditions the professional identity was built for are replaced by the specific conditions the offshore passage produces.

What they typically find is that they are more capable than the comfortable professional life had recently required them to demonstrate, that the composure in the difficult night and the presence in the watch and the ease in the water reveal the person underneath the performance in a way that the performance itself, however genuine, was not demonstrating.

This is the knowledge the office does not produce because the office is not designed to produce it. The offshore passage produces it as a natural consequence of putting the professional person in conditions that the professional context did not prepare them for and watching what they do. What they typically do is the thing that watching has confirmed they are capable of. The offshore passage is the context that makes the confirmation possible. The office, however excellent the professional within it, is not that context.
