The Smallest Version of Naora: One Week in the Mediterranean and What It Contains

The most common form of the hesitation that the person considering a Naora leg expresses is a question about duration: whether one week is enough to understand the experience, whether the full offshore life requires a longer commitment to be felt properly, whether the week-long leg is the version that produces the things the Naora voyage is described as producing or whether those things require the three-week leg or the Atlantic crossing to arrive.

The honest answer is that the one-week Mediterranean leg contains most of what the Naora voyage offers in condensed form, and that condensed does not mean diminished. Seven days on the Eighty2 departing Bodrum and moving through the Aegean and the Dodecanese provides: the first offshore passage, the first anchorage in a bay without roads or other boats, the full diving programme in the clear Aegean water, the first night watch, the full cycle of the offshore day from the six o’clock swim to the evening at anchor, the specific quality of the conversations that the group of twelve produces in the offshore context, and the last evening that nobody leaves early.

Seven days. Most of what the experience is.

What the One-Week Leg Does Not Provide

The one-week leg does not provide the open ocean passage, the three or four days of continuous sailing between coasts that the Atlantic crossing or the Pacific trade wind passage produces in the offshore sailor. The specific quality of the deep offshore, the days when the horizon is the only horizon in every direction and the land is not visible from the mast requires the longer leg.

This is not a small thing. For many members, the deep offshore passage is the specific experience they come back for after the first Mediterranean leg has given them the taste of what the voyage offers. The week shows them enough to want the month. The month gives them the thing the week was pointing toward.

The practical recommendation for the person who is new to the Naora experience and is deciding where to start: start with the Mediterranean leg. It is the first chapter of the circumnavigation, departing Bodrum in May 2027.

It is the leg that combines the most accessible sailing conditions with the most concentrated cultural and historical landscape on the route: Ephesus, Patmos, the Aegean islands, the Dodecanese. It is the leg that confirms whether the offshore experience is the experience for you, at the time and cost investment that allows the confirmation without the full commitment. If the confirmation is yes, and for the person who is reading this and recognising themselves in the description, it usually is the following legs are already available for booking through the Circle app.

The smallest version of Naora is the version that is large enough to know whether you want the larger one. For most people, one week is more than enough to know.
