The Last Winter Before Departure: What We Are Building On Land

The Naora voyage departs from Bodrum in May 2027. Between now and then there is a winter that is not a waiting period. It is the last and most intensive phase of the construction of everything that the departure requires: the vessel, the community, the operational structure, and the personal preparations of the two founders who have been building toward this point across several years of planning and relationship-building and the specific work of turning a vision into a scheduled departure.

I want to describe what this winter actually contains, because the description of a big project from the outside tends to focus on the milestones and the announcements and the moments of visible progress. The winter before a five-year sailing circumnavigation is mostly not those things. It is mostly the work that happens in the spaces between the milestones, and it is the quality of that work that will determine whether the departure produces what the voyage is designed to produce.

The Vessel

Sven, Naora’s founder and captain, is working with Lagoon on the configuration of Discovery, our 2025 Lagoon Eighty2. He plans every weather window and sails every leg himself. This is not a standard delivery conversation. Discovery will depart Bodrum in May 2027 configured specifically for a five-year circumnavigation with a professional crew and a rotating membership of up to twelve people: the diving compressor at 300 bar with DIN and international connections, the watermaker sized for the Pacific legs where shore water supply is absent, the medical equipment assembled for offshore rather than coastal sailing, the communication systems that provide connectivity and safety capability from the outer Tuamotu atolls and the Red Sea offshore sites and everywhere between.

These conversations are detailed and they are long, and Sven is giving them the attention they deserve. The difference between a boat that is right for this voyage and a boat that is merely excellent is in exactly these details: the placement of the compressor relative to the dive gear storage, the electrical load calculation that determines whether the solar and wind generation is sufficient for the Pacific passages or whether additional capacity is required, the specific medical kit composition that he reviews against the requirements of the regions the route covers.

Lagoon builds extraordinary vessels. The configuration of Discovery is the specific expression of what this voyage requires from that vessel, and the winter is where that expression is being finalised.

The Community

Antony, Naora’s co-founder, is building the community. Not in the sense of adding names to a list but in the sense of having the conversations that determine whether the people who are interested in Naora are the people who are right for it: the first calls, the follow-up meetings, the specific process of understanding each person’s context and each person’s fit with what the voyage is designed to produce. The Circle’s first members are in these conversations now.

Some of them have already committed to specific legs. Others are in the process of understanding whether the commitment is right for where they are in their lives.

The community building that happens before the departure is as important as the community that forms at sea, because the people who board in Bodrum in May 2027 will not be strangers arriving at a product they purchased. They will be members of a Circle that already has a history, however short, of honest conversation and mutual understanding. The Long Table that happens at the first anchorage will begin from a foundation that the winter’s conversations have built.

The Personal Preparations

Each of the two founders is doing what this winter requires of them personally. Sven is rebuilding the knee and the fitness platform that the injury interrupted. Alongside that recovery, he is working with the shore team on the nutritional and training protocols that will travel with the voyage as the foundation of how the crew and the members think about the physical dimension of five years at sea.

Antony is deepening the Commodore preparation: reading, thinking, having the conversations that will inform the Long Table openings across the first two years of the voyage. Alongside this, he is maintaining the relationships with the partners and the suppliers whose cooperation the departure requires, while Sven manages the technical complexity of the vessel configuration.

And the partners: each of the founders’ partners is in some version of their own preparation for what May 2027 means for the people they share their lives with. This is not a small thing to acknowledge. The Naora voyage is a five-year commitment that belongs to two men and that is felt by the people who love them. The winter is the last one before that commitment is active, and it is being lived in the full awareness of what comes after it.
