What Naora Is Not (And Why That Matters)

The most precise description of what Naora is might be the description of what it is not, because the things it is not are familiar enough that the contrast produces a clearer picture than the description of what it is alone. This is the article for the person who understands the difference but wants someone else to articulate it.

Not a Cruise

The cruise is the managed delivery of a standardised experience to the largest possible number of passengers on a predetermined schedule. The passenger is the consumer of a product whose characteristics were determined before they boarded and that operates independently of their specific presence or absence.

The Naora voyage requires the member’s specific presence: the community is different because of who joined it, the experience cannot be standardised because it is produced by the interaction between the people aboard and the conditions they encounter rather than by the management of the conditions to produce a predetermined experience.

The cruise delivers. Naora produces. The difference is the difference between receiving and participating.

Not a Charter

The charter is the rental of a vessel for a fixed period, typically with the option of a professional crew, for the use of the charterer’s private group. The charter provides access. Naora provides community. The charterer brings their existing relationships aboard and the charter amplifies or tests those relationships in the sailing context.

The Naora member comes aboard into a community that the selection process has assembled and that the voyage has been building since the departure from Bodrum, a community with its own culture and its own rituals and its own specific quality that the charter, whose crew is a service provider rather than a co-founder, cannot produce. The charter is a better version of the sailing holiday. Naora is a different kind of thing entirely.

Not a Retreat

The retreat is the temporary suspension of the ordinary life in a managed context designed to produce a specific outcome: the detox, the mindfulness, the leadership insight, the wellness reset. The retreat’s value proposition is the outcome it promises and the management structure it provides for producing that outcome.

The Naora voyage does not promise a specific outcome and does not manage the context to produce a predetermined one. It creates the conditions in which specific things tend to happen, and then it allows the specific things to happen without managing them toward a conclusion. The retreat tells you what you will feel at the end of it. The Naora voyage does not know what you will feel at the end of it, and the not-knowing is the condition of the specific quality of what actually happens.

Not a Sailing School

The sailing school is designed to produce a qualified sailor. The Naora voyage is not designed to produce qualified sailors, though some members leave it with significantly more offshore experience than they arrived with. The offshore sailing knowledge that the voyage provides is a byproduct of participation rather than the purpose of it.

The purpose is the experience of the offshore life in its complete form: the community, the places, the conditions, the passage, the specific quality of a life organised around what the sea requires. The sailing is how the experience is delivered. The sailing is not the experience.
