Liesl, the ING Years, and What We Talked About Between Races

A friendship that lasts twenty-two years passes through enough different contexts that the contexts are no longer the description of the friendship. The friendship that started in the racing context with Liesl and the Roompot dock passed through the ING years, through the different professional trajectories that both of us followed after the racing, through the specific transitions of a life in its middle decades when the structures that the earlier chapters built are tested by the questions that the earlier chapters had not yet asked. The contexts changed. The friendship did not change in the way the contexts changed, which is the definition of the durable friendship: the one that survives the contexts that produced it and continues in the spaces between them.

The Liesl races were the beginning. Not the beginning of Sven’s sailing life, which predated Liesl by many years, but the beginning of the chapter in which I was present as a colleague and a competitor and eventually as a friend who was two stijgers away in the marina and who knew the quality of his sailing from having watched it from close enough to see the decisions being made rather than just the results they produced.

The boat with Liesl was a specific chapter of the Belgian and Dutch racing circuit, a specific community of people in a specific period of the sport’s development in the region, and the friendships it produced were the friendships of people who were in the same intense and specific context at the same time and who chose to continue those friendships after the context changed.

The ING Years

The ING years overlapped with the sailing years in the specific way that the professional life and the sailing life overlap for most people who are serious about both: the professional context providing the financial structure that makes the sailing possible and the sailing context providing the specific quality of presence and purpose that the professional context does not always provide in the same form.

The conversations at the ING yacht and the conversations at the dock were different conversations about some of the same subjects: the decision-making under uncertainty that the bank required and that the navigation table required, the management of risk in conditions that were not fully predictable, the specific quality of judgment that both contexts rewarded in ways that neither fully named.

What we talked about between the races was what the races were about when they were not about the races: the wind shift that was a decision problem, the tactical choice that was a judgment call under pressure, the specific team dynamic on the boat that was a leadership problem before it was a sailing problem.

The sailing and the professional life used different vocabulary for the same underlying questions, and the conversations in the harbour bar after the racing had the specific quality of conversations between people who were working on the same questions from different directions and who found the comparison between the directions illuminating in ways that neither direction alone produced.

What the Twenty-Two Years Accumulated

The specific thing that twenty-two years of friendship accumulates is the reference library of the other person that no shorter duration produces. The friend of two years knows the current chapter. The friend of twenty-two years knows the current chapter and the four that preceded it and the specific continuities between them that the person living them sometimes loses sight of in the proximity of the current one.

This is the specific value of the long friendship that the shorter friendship cannot replicate: not more warmth, not more loyalty, but the longer view that produces the specific kind of honesty that is only available when the person being honest has been paying attention for long enough to say something that the other person recognises as true about a longer arc than the current chapter describes.

The conversation I have with Sven now is not the conversation of the Roompot dock or the Liesl races or the ING years. It is the conversation that all of those conversations built toward: the conversation between two people who have known each other across enough different contexts to have a complete enough picture of each other to speak directly about what that picture contains.

The Naora voyage, which is the current chapter, is the chapter that the previous chapters were building toward, and the friend who was present for the building has a perspective on the current chapter that the chapter itself, however extraordinary, cannot produce on its own. Twenty-two years is the duration of the perspective. The perspective is the friendship’s most specific gift.
