The decision to accept Bitcoin as payment for a Naora membership was not a marketing decision. It was not a statement about technology or a gesture toward a demographic we wanted to attract. It was the recognition of a coherence: that the people who build and sail the Naora voyage and the people who hold Bitcoin as a meaningful part of their financial life share a specific underlying disposition toward the world, and that requiring one of them to translate their assets into the other’s preferred form before a transaction can occur is a friction that serves no one and reflects a convention rather than a principle.
The Naora voyage is, at its most fundamental level, an expression of the belief that the conventional structure of a life, the office, the schedule, the accumulation of obligations that eventually become the life rather than the means to it, can be set aside in favour of something more direct.
The person who arrives at this belief through sailing and the person who arrives at it through Bitcoin have taken different roads to the same place. The road through Bitcoin is the recognition that the monetary system, like the travel industry and the social calendar and the career ladder, is a set of conventions that can be opted out of in specific and meaningful ways. The Naora voyage is one such opt-out. Bitcoin is another.
The Shared Disposition
The person who chooses to hold a meaningful portion of their wealth in Bitcoin has made a specific decision: that the conventional store of value, the currency managed by institutions they did not choose, denominated in a unit whose supply can be expanded by decisions they have no part in, is a convention they are not willing to rely on exclusively. This decision is not primarily about returns or about speculation.
It is about sovereignty: the desire to hold value in a form that does not depend on the trustworthiness of any specific institution or the stability of any specific political arrangement.
The person who builds a five-year sailing voyage around a private membership of twelve people, anchored in bays that no cruise ship can reach, moving according to the conditions rather than the schedule, has made a structurally identical decision.
The conventional travel product, the hotel that requires the infrastructure, the cruise that requires the port, the resort that requires the management company, is a convention they are not willing to rely on exclusively for the full scope of their experience of the world. The sailing voyage is sovereign in the same way that Bitcoin is sovereign: its value does not depend on any institution remaining trustworthy or any infrastructure remaining available.
Why Freedom Moves in Both Directions
The title of this article says freedom moves in both directions. The meaning is specific: freedom is not a destination you arrive at when the balance sheet reaches a certain number or the boat reaches a certain latitude. It is a practice, expressed continuously in the decisions you make about how to hold your time and your wealth and your attention.
The person who has accumulated financial freedom in a form that requires institutional permission to access has not fully achieved the freedom they were accumulating toward. The person who has freedom of movement but is paying for it in a currency whose value is managed by others is expressing a partial version of the sovereignty they are living.
Accepting Bitcoin for a Naora membership is Naora’s recognition of this: that the member who has done the work of achieving sovereignty over their wealth deserves the ability to use that sovereignty in the purchase of their sovereignty of movement without translating it into a form that partially negates what they have built.
The freedom moves in both directions, through the asset and through the voyage, and the transaction between them should reflect rather than contradict the values of both.
